Frameworks we cover
Several can apply to the same trip. The journey report lists every one that may apply to yours. Tap a framework to see what it covers.
- Applies to flights departing an EU, EEA or Swiss airport on any airline, and to flights into the EU, EEA or Switzerland on an airline based there (e.g. a Swiss airline flying New York–Zurich). Fixed compensation of €250–€600 (at most €400 on flights within the EU) for arrival delays of 3 hours or more, missed connections, cancellations or schedule changes with less than 14 days' notice and denied boarding, unless extraordinary circumstances caused it. Meals, refreshments and a hotel when needed, and the choice of a refund or an alternative flight.
- The UK's version of EC261 after Brexit. Covers flights departing UK airports, and flights into the UK or EU on UK or EU airlines. Fixed compensation of £220–£520 for arrival delays of 3 hours or more, cancellations with less than 14 days' notice and denied boarding, plus care during long waits and the choice of a refund or an alternative flight.
- International treaty covering almost all international flights between its signatory states. No fixed amount: the airline pays documented costs caused by a delay up to 6,303 SDR, and lost or damaged baggage up to 1,519 SDR, unless it took all reasonable measures.
- No fixed cash compensation for delays. Passengers get an automatic cash refund if a flight is cancelled or significantly changed (3+ hours domestic, 6+ hours international) and they choose not to travel. Involuntary denied boarding pays 200–400% of the one-way fare, up to $2,150. Lost or damaged bags on domestic flights: up to $4,700. Passengers must be allowed off the plane after 3 hours on the tarmac (4 hours international).
- Covers flights to, from and within Canada. CA$125–1,000 for delays and cancellations within the airline's control, depending on airline size and length of delay; CA$900–2,400 for denied boarding. Food, drink and communication from 2 hours, and a refund plus compensation if the rebooking doesn't suit you.
- No fixed compensation amount. Passengers get communication from 1 hour, meals from 2 hours and accommodation from 4 hours of delay, plus rebooking or a refund. Damages can be claimed through consumer-protection channels and the consumer courts, which often award moral damages — the amount is set case by case, not by law.
- No fixed cash compensation. For long delays, cancellations and denied boarding, passengers get rebooking or a refund within 30 days, plus meals, communication and a hotel when needed. Further damages can be claimed through consumer channels.
- General consumer law applies to flights. There is no fixed compensation schedule; passengers can get refunds, rebooking and damages for proven losses through SERNAC or the courts.
